INTERVIEWING MY CHARACTERS (AND MYSELF)

Last week, I filled out an interview with Harry and Alana from Welcome to New York to be featured in a blog promo. I had so much fun doing it that I ended up interviewing Pete and Becky from Once in a Lifetime, too. And, then, I thought it would be fun to answer the same questions myself!

Find the results below.

WELCOME TO NEW YORK

  1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Alana: Oh my God, what is a free day? I haven’t had one in so long! I’d probably just sleep the whole day. Another thing I haven’t done in a while.
Harry: Go out with the family, take them to the park. Remember when Juliet was little and we used to do that all the time?
Alana: Yeah, I loved those days. Can I change my answer?
  2. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
Alana: I feel like Stephen Sondheim is the mandatory answer for anyone in my line of business—which doesn’t make it fake or untrue. I’d love to have a chat with Idina Menzel, as well, for obvious reasons. Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda! I’d love to work with him someday.
    Harry: My mother.
Alana: *holds his hand and squeezes it*
  3. What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?
Alana: The nights when I get home from work and they’re already asleep, I have a chance to assess how lucky I am. I think happiness is in those quiet moments of reflection.
Harry: I can’t top that answer. I’ll just add that I’m happy when we’re all awake and get to spend
    quality time together.
    Alana: *blushes and laughs*
  4. What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?
Alana: Hmmm, difficult question. I wouldn’t say any virtue is overrated in the current state of the world. It’s so hard to find the most basic ones, like respect and empathy.
Harry: Can I answer what I think is the most underrated one? Forgiveness.
  5. Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.
Alana: I have a secret bookstagram account, I taught myself to speak French, and I’ve been to Disneyland three times when I was a child.
Harry: I’m left-handed, I’m an amateur photographer, and I don’t like milk in my tea.
    Alana: What? Fake Brit detected!
Harry: What can I say? New York really changed me.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

  1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Pete: My perfect day off starts by taking a long shower, having a bountiful breakfast, and exploring the city. Whatever city I’m in, even if it’s at home.
Becky: Watch British Bake-off in the tub.
Pete: A woman of simple pleasures.
    Becky: *shrugs*
  2. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
Pete: Oooh, I like the ‘imaginary’ option. Let me think…
Becky: Only thinking about this question gives me anxiety. So, it’s a no for me.
Pete: What if you didn’t have anxiety? What if you actually enjoyed meeting people?
    Becky: Can’t relate.
    Pete: Just pretend!
    Becky:
    Pete: *sighs*
  3. What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?
Pete: Being on stage, definitely. That’s when I’m most happy.
Becky: I don’t believe that exists, but I’ll agree with Pete. Being on stage is the closest to being happy I’ve ever got.
Pete: Are you sure? *raises his eyebrows*
Becky: Yes! *widens her eyes threateningly*
  4. What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?
    Becky: Politeness.
Pete: Of course you’d say that…
    Becky: It’s the truth.
Pete: I’d say honesty. Not that I’m advocating for lying, I just think sometimes it’s better if we keep some things to ourselves.
    Becky: Like my answer?
    Pete:
  5. Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.
Pete: Harry Styles! That’s the person I’d like to spend a day with.
    Becky: *rolls her eyes*
Pete: Okay, to answer this one: I competed—and won—several school swimming competitions, I never learned how to drive, and I’ve never disclosed my actual birth date anywhere, to anyone.
Becky: I know what day it is!
    Pete: You’re the only exception.
Becky: And your parents. I mean, your mother definitely knows your birth date.
    Pete: *sighs*
Becky: I’m a pretty decent baker, I like to go camping and on hikes, and I’m a vegetarian.
Pete: People know you’re a vegetarian.
    Becky: No, they don’t!
Pete: It’s on your Wikipedia page.
Becky: What? I have a Wikipedia page?
    Pete:
Becky: Well, I don’t look myself up online. Make that the third thing, then.

THE AUTHOR

  1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
I’m gonna say I’d love to be out in nature, preferably somewhere near the water (I love the ocean), although in reality I’d probably just spend the whole day reading and eating chocolate in bed. Maybe reading and eating chocolate at the beach? That would be perfect!
  2. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
I’m gonna go for imaginary here and say my characters! Is that too cringey? I’m sorry if it is, but I’d love to meet them. I’d love to spend a writing day at Green Leaf and observe Harry’s relationship with his employees and family. I’d love to watch one of Alana’s musicals and maybe get a picture with her at the stage door. I’d love to go to a Pete and Becky concert! And maybe go grab some drinks with them afterward? I know Becky would decline, but I think Pete would make such a good company for that sort of thing!
  3. What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?
I don’t have a specific answer to this one. I think happiness creeps up on us when we least expect it. There are so many moments—small and big—when I can remember being perfectly happy. Sometimes it was just a sunny day. Sometimes it was during a trip I waited all my life to take. Definitely when I published WtNY. And since I’m close to publishing Once, I’m close to another of those moments!
  4. What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?
This is a hard one but, as an introvert and someone affected by a condition known as Resting Bitch Face™️, I’m gonna say likability. Just because I look like I’m having a miserable time and am unable to participate in meaningless conversations doesn’t mean I’m a bad person!
  5. Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.
  • My favorite color is lilac/purple. I have a purple wall in my bedroom, purple blinds, purple duvet. I want to dye my hair purple someday! That’s why I made Becky’s hair purple—while I don’t do it myself, I can live vicariously through her.
  • I believe in astrology because my personality is exactly what my zodiac sign describes (I’m a Pisces, by the way). I’m not one of those people who blames everything on Mercury retrograde or who justifies my flaws with the star alignment of the day I was born, but I believe in being guided by signs.
  • I have anxiety. I’m not “officially” diagnosed, but I know I have it. I struggled a lot through my childhood and adolescence as it made me feel very different and very broken. I was well into my 20s when I started relating my feelings—or symptoms—to anxiety and developing systems to deal with it. This is one of the most important things the Internet brought us, I think, this way of learning more about ourselves and discovering we’re not alone.

Is there anything you’d like to ask me or these characters that isn’t answered in the interview? Leave a comment below and I’ll get to you!
